When To Come Fishing in the Florida Keys

We spend January through June on Cudjoe Key in Florida's lower Keys. This is a great time for fishing in the Keys, especially if you're a snowbird escaping a cold climate for some sunshine and saltwater. Each month does offer slightly different fishing opportunities.

FEBRUARY and MARCH -The fishing tends to be geared toward Permit, Bonefish, Barracuda, and Sharks with occasional Tarpon action. Weather conditions are always a factor in which species will be available. This is particularly true in March. Cold fronts willHelen Clare poses with a fish of a lifetime push the primary species off the flats in search of warmer water. However, with extended warm spells, they will eagerly return to the flats to feed in large numbers. This is especially true of the elusive Permit. March is widely believed to be one of the better months for Permit in the lower Keys.

The first good size schools of Tarpon usually arrive sometime in February and March. Again, it is totally weather dependent. But when these monsters first flood into the backcountry, they are usually very green and hungry making them ideal targets for fly fisherman.

APRIL - Cold fronts are still possible but as warmer, more stable weather begins to Capt. Joe with a nice Contents Bonesettle in the Tarpon begin to move into the Lower Keys backcountry basins and flats in significant numbers. The Tarpon action can range from red hot fly fishing to bait fishing the channels. Bonefish and Permit action remains good, especially on the stronger tides and warmer days.

MAY - Full on Tarpon season! The big fish are now dispersed throughout the backcountry and will be found on their migratory route on the Atlantic Ocean side. Bonefishing onlyThere's nothing like your first Tarpon on a fly! improves, especially early and late while Permit fishing dies off as these fish move offshore for spawning.

JUNE - We only have a few days left before returning home to Montana, and they practically have to drag us away, as the Tarpon can be seen migrating along the Keys in incredible numbers. These fish are tough to catch, but there's nothing like getting 50 to 100 shots a day, or sometimes more!

JULY to FEBRUARY - We are back in Montana pursuing pretty, little Trout but if you are interested in fishing the Keys, let me know and I can hook you up with another excellent flats guide.
